Abdominal contents may push through a healing surgical scar or incision. This is referred to as an incisional hernia. It results from the weakening of an abdominal muscle due to a surgical incision. Improper wound healing, infection, obesity, and strain can all increase the risk of developing an incisional hernia. Treatment Larger incisional hernias should be treated through open surgery and smaller ones can be managed through laparoscopic incisional hernia surgery. In Laparoscopic Hernia surgery, the surgeon makes 3 small incisions on the left side of the abdominal wall. Through one of the incisions, the surgeon will then insert a laparoscope (Camera) which will help guide him/her through the surgery. Then the surgeon will insert other instruments through the other small incisions and guide the protruding tissue or organ back to its place. Then a mesh is placed to cover the hernia opening. Post-surgical care Within 24 hours of the incisional hernia surgery, the patient should not make too much movement. The patient should not exert too much pressure on the abdomen by taking appropriate measures. The patient if undergone laparoscopic surgery should follow these guidelines for one month. If the patient has undergone open surgery then he should follow these guidelines for 3 months. This will reduce the chances of recurrence of the hernia.
