When it came time to build stairs to the attic in my shop, I had a slight problem...if I built a conventional stairway to the attic landing, I used up about 2 1/2 feet of what would've been a drive-through bay in the shop, and if I built it inside the room on the other end of the building, I used up a fair amount of space I had intended for seating at family gatherings. My solution, inspired by Ben, at Woby Design, was a folding stairway. I could build a reasonably wide stairway, and still keep my drive-through bay! Thanks, Ben! The entire thing is built out of 5 sheets of 3/4" Maple plywood, 5 lbs of screws (Various sizes), 52 3.5" hinges, and about a gallon of glue! No having to sort endlessly through lumber at the store trying to find a straight board with no knots in it! Some of the materials and tools I used in this build... Spax screws...2 1/2 inch and 2 inch, and made in the USA!... https://amzn.to/4kGgzOV Hinges... https://amzn.to/41U2Dtg Gas Shocks... https://amzn.to/41occAb TiteBond wood glue... https://amzn.to/43CEYyN Kobalt 24v Max drill... https://amzn.to/3QWxsHA Kobalt 24v Max 1/4" Impact driver... https://amzn.to/3FuOAl7 Kobalt 24v Max 6 1/2" circular saw... https://amzn.to/43zH9TM Kobalt 24v Max Jigsaw... https://amzn.to/43znHqk Some product links are Amazon and other affiliate links, meaning if you buy something, there is no extra cost to you, but we'll receive a small commission.
