It is a subfascial space which appears as a triangular depression below the inguinal ligament when the thigh is flexed, abducted and laterally rotated. The femoral canal is the passageway by which femoral structures exit from the abdomen into the upper thigh. Its boundaries are: anteriorly: inguinal ligament. medially: pubic bone and lacunar ligament. laterally: iliopsoas muscle. The femoral sheath is the funnel-shaped fascial space that extends from the abdomen, inferior to the inguinal ligament, into the femoral triangle.
