(4 Apr 1995) Spanish/Nat Under international pressure to combat drug trafficking, the Mexican government is intensifying its efforts to wipe out the illegal trade. U.S. drug enforcement authorities say Mexico is Latin America's largest transshipment point for drugs from Colombia. APTV went with Mexico's special anti-drug forces to witness its attempts to eradicate fields of marijuana. Mexico's Attorney General has sent these special anti-drug forces on a mission to wipe out several acres of marijuana fields. The southern state of Oaxaca is a major centre for illegal marijuana cultivation. Drug raids like this are the Mexican government's way of showing it is taking the task of eradicating drugs seriously. Inviting reporters to witness the burning of huge piles of cannabis is a public relations effort designed to counter accusations that some high officials are in league with the drug cartels. SOUNDBITE: "By seizing this drug we are keeping drug traffickers from making profits. Also we are discouraging these farmers from growing this kind of crop." SUPER CAPTION: Capt.
