Recently food delivery app Swiggy announced that all female delivery partners would get 2 days of no-questions-asked period leave every single month. As with most things, the internet was divided on how equality will be achieved when people who menstruate are given “special treatment”. We use this term, because it’s not just women who get periods - The truth is that not only is this pain not taken seriously - but period disorders are given even less attention. Today we talk about one such often ignored ailment - Endometriosis. Endometriosis is a common condition in people who menstruate. It’s chronic, it’s painful, and it often gets steadily worse. Normally, the tissue that lines a woman’s uterus, known as the endometrium, is found only in the uterus. But when someone develops endometriosis, microscopic bits of this tissue grow on other organs such as the ovaries, the outer wall of the uterus, the fallopian tubes, etc - these also end up shedding, leading to clotting of blood. When the conversation around Endometriosis itself is almost never brought to the fore, the myths surrounding it keep mounting up - today we aim to bust some of these myths.
