According to The New York Times, U.S. President Donald Trump has told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders that Ukraine and Russia must find their own path to ending the war. This message reportedly came after Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Trump told Zelenskyy and other European leaders after speaking with Putin that resolving the war is a matter for Russia and Ukraine alone,” the NYT reports. This stance comes just days after Trump claimed that only he and Putin had the authority to broker a deal. Citing unnamed officials, the report also states that Trump has backed away from previous threats to support a European-led pressure campaign, which would have included additional sanctions against Russia. Unless Trump shifts his position again, the talks with Putin and Zelenskyy may result in what the NYT describes as a win for Moscow: reduced U.S. pressure and growing divisions within NATO. These emerging transatlantic disagreements could come to a head during upcoming G7 and NATO summits this summer. Key agenda items at the NATO summit include long-term military and economic support for Ukraine and new deterrence strategies against Russia. Trump’s Conversations with Putin and Zelenskyy On May 19, Trump held separate phone calls with both Putin and Zelenskyy, speaking with the Ukrainian president twice—once before his call with the Russian leader, and again afterward. Following the calls, Trump publicly stated that Russia and Ukraine should engage in direct negotiations to bring the war to an end. Media reports suggest that several European leaders participated in the second call with Zelenskyy.
