Today we’re looking at a historically significant and deeply poignant Wingfield family medal group spanning two major conflicts of the British Empire. This remarkable collection includes the First World War medals and Memorial Plaque awarded to Stoker 1st Class Joseph Wingfield of HMS Pathfinder, who was tragically lost when the cruiser was torpedoed in September 1914, becoming one of the earliest Royal Navy losses of the war. Alongside this is the Afghanistan Medal 1878–79–80 awarded to Lance Corporal Robert Wingfield for service during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, linking Victorian campaign service with early First World War naval sacrifice. The group is beautifully presented in a period oak display frame and accompanied by extensive original family ephemera, including: • Royal Humane Society certificate awarded to Joseph Wingfield in 1903 for saving a life • Late 19th and early 20th century family photographs • Birth and death certificates • Original family documents and supporting paperwork This is more than a medal group, it’s a documented, multi-generation story of service, sacrifice, and gallantry. A powerful research opportunity and an exceptional display collection. If you’re interested in historic medal groups, naval history, or family research collections, this is one to watch.
