CINCINNATI (WKRC) - For the first time, Cincinnati police officers hit the streets wearing body cams. The department rolled out its program on Aug. 10, beginning with officers in the Central Business District. Chief Eliot Isaac and Capt. Doug Wiseman demonstrated the activation of the cameras during a roll call exercise. He says the cameras show their commitment to transparency. Officers with the body cams are expected to activate them during all dispatched radio runs or self-initiated activity. Police acknowledge that during ambushes or other sudden activity, the officers likely won't have time to activate the cameras. Once the officers are done with their shift, they'll return their cameras to the docking station. Any videos recorded will be uploaded to the cloud and the batteries will be recharged. Officers who fail to use the equipment or don't report damage to the body cams could be disciplined. Mayor John Cranley acknowledged that no one likes having someone looking over their shoulder but "You have a right to know what your government is doing". He said there was some resistance when cruiser dash cams rolled out but they only showed that Cincinnati has a professional, courteous and conscientious police force. It has exonerated officers nine times of out ten, when accused of misconduct. All CPD districts should have a total of 700 cameras by the end of the year. The department's policy and use are online.
