Published in 1959, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is an atmospheric horror. Hill House is malignant and most definitely haunted. When Dr. John Montague and three companions occupy Hill House, the horror starts to infuse and infect. The genius in this depiction of a haunted house is not in the poltergeist activity that occurs. For certain, loud banging and the turning of a bedroom door knob by a spectral force is alarming. The quiet weeping and babbling of a child that the occupants know is not there is likewise scary. However, Jackson turns the horror inward. Eleanor Vance, a 32 year old sheltered and insecure young woman, enters the house with great foreboding. Hill House manipulates and distorts Eleanor until she is entirely confused as to whether she is herself or part of Hill House. Is Hill House acting upon her or is Hill House possessing her? Eleanor's thoughts turn cancerous and malignant although, from an outward perspective, she appears to be just a bit off-balance by the experience of Hill House. Interplayed with the outward manifestations of the haunting and the interior experience of the haunting as it relates to Eleanor, is the casual nonchalance exhibited by the other occupants. Theo, Luke, and Dr. Montague experience the same poltergeist activity, but they manage it well. The witty dialogue between the three is an off-set to the horror experienced by Eleanor. It serves to highlight the evil of the haunting. The Haunting of Hill House is a must read for any fan of the horror genre and is a welcome entry point for those unsure about that genre. Because of the insurmountable skill of the author in creating mood and despair, The Haunting of Hill House earns 4.25 stars out of 5.
