Experience the beauty of Sharada Shabdam performed by our student Divya Lakshmi, invoking the wisdom and blessings of Goddess Saraswathi this Navaratri. Shabdam is a pivotal composition in the Bharatanatyam repertoire, often considered the bridge between the pure dance (Nritta) and expressive dance (Nritya) sections. It introduces the dancer to the realm of storytelling, where gestures, expressions, and rhythmic movements come together to convey devotion, mythological stories, and emotional depth. Shabdam is a beautiful blend of rhythmic grace and expressive storytelling and the lyrics (Sahitya) play a very significant role. The themes usually revolve around devotion to a deity, like Lord Krishna or Lord Shiva, or praise of a royal patron. This Shabdam is in praise of Goddess Saraswathi, describing her various attributes, glories and beauty. The dancer dances the praises of the beautiful Goddess of Sringeri who is adorned with rudraksha beads, seated on a swan with her radiating grace protecting all her devotees. The dancer surrenders to the goddess who is the embodiment of the chatur vedas, who takes away all the impurities of a human soul. Kama, moha, mada and matsarya.
