The Divertissement for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, completed at the end of March 1927 and premiered in Paris in April, is a typical product of the "Roaring Twenties", as it contains a Charleston and many other things that bear witness to the spirit and desires of the time. In its mixture of harsh dissonances, free tonality, neo-baroque rhythm and a cheeky, frivolous art of characterization, it is related to the early Hindemith, whose level is by no means undercut here.
