At times it's fun to complain about the suits in the game industry. Swearing at big companies like Activision and Electronic Arts while wishing The Suits would stay the fuck away from our beloved video games. How those suits are destroying everything WE love. But at times gaming just needs the corporate world and we have listed five reasons why this is so. 5. Money Love it or hate it, but if you want a big game then the developers need money to make it. Of course it's nice to get one million dollar thanks to crowd funding. A ten man studio can use that money to work paid on a game for two years. But as soon as more people start working, there's money needed to pay for all that. That's where investors and publishers come in with their demands and their bags of money. 4. Decision making Dean Hall has been very successful with DayZ, but he has never published a finished game. He's a creative man and very good at that, but in the end he needs the corporate part of the business. What does a certain feature cost and what does it add to the game? Suits make decisions that are harder for creative people. Look at Duke Nukem Forever where the creative peeps kept adding features that kept changing the game. Being good at making games doesn't mean one is good at business. 3. Market research Developers make games because they think they are fun to play, while suits make games based on market research. We're not saying one of the two ways is wrong, but we just want to point out there are different motivations to create a certain game. A game like The Sims was a creative idea that turned out to be very successful, while the free-to-play Command & Conquer was shut down during its development after market research pointed out the game would not be successful. 2. New revenue models The rise of free-to-play isn't a creative decision. It started as a business model for online role playing games for a more mainstream and younger audience, like Runescape and Neopets. It's a way to tie a new audience to a product and make them pay later on. And that are some A-MA-ZING free to play games nowadays, but in essence this is of course a corporate decision. So, thanks to corporate your mom can call herself a gamer too as she's playing Candy Crush or Wordfeud. 1. Marketing A new game in the Call of Duty or Halo series will never ever go unnoticed, but sometimes a gem slips through the maze no matter what the developer does to push it. Just look at the story of Thomas Was Alone that only sold a couple of thousand copies in its first months. Thanks to Youtube coverage the story driven puzzle game gained popularity and now sold more than 1 million copies. To reach a mass audience one not only needs a good game and a good name, but also money for promotion and marketing. Thomas Was Alone got lucky, but many beautiful gems go unnoticed....
