(29 Dec 2019) Hundreds of men, women, and children gathered outside the Jamia University in New Delhi on Sunday to protest against a new citizenship law and police action during earlier demonstrations. Protesters wore bandages to symbolise injuries inflicted on several students by police, with one in particular who lost vision in his eye after he was struck by a baton. More than a dozen people have been killed and more than 1,000 people arrested in protests that have erupted nationwide against the new Citizenship Amendment Act, which excludes Muslims. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has defended the new law and accused the opposition of pushing the country into a "fear psychosis." The law allows Hindus, Christians and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It does not apply to Muslims. Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to India's streets to call for the revocation of the law. India's Supreme Court is set to consider petitions challenging the law's constitutionality late next month.
