In July, 2011 as part of a wider plan to close several rural call-taking and dispatch centres, Victoria Police closed the VKC Bendigo centre and migrated its operations and responsibilities to VKC Ballarat, a newer and larger facility staffed and operated by employees of the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) and which was already managing other agencies call-taking and communications in some areas. This was inline with a similar exercise that took place in the Metropolitan area of Police communications in September, 1995 when the then State Emergency Communications Centre, under the direction of the Bureau of Emergency Services Telecommunications for the state assumed control and responsibly for such services. That migration however was to metropolitan based locations, such as the former Victoria Police Centre in Flinders Street, Melbourne, since closed (and a new facility constructed elsewhere), and Tally Ho in Burwood for other metropolitan and some regional based agencies and entities. Heard here is the farewell transmission for Victoria Police ‘VKC Bendigo’ and the acceptance by VKC Ballarat (ESTA) of the radio communications channels for the area once served by VKC Bendigo. This transmission took place on what was the Victoria Police legacy analogue VHF Voting Network (interlaced with the SMR Network). With the closure of the Bendigo D24 facility and migration to ESTA at Ballarat this permitted 22 Police Members to return to frontline Policing duties.
