Medical Insight: SBRT for Prostate Cancer - Essentia Health

Approximately one in every six men will receive a prostate cancer diagnosis in his lifetime. Cancer of the prostate often comes with no symptoms, but can be highly treatable. Now, a fairly new therapy called Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is not only proving effective in treating the cancer but making it easier and more convenient for the patient. SBRT is a specialized way of delivering radiation therapy for people suffering from several different kinds of cancer, including prostate cancer. SBRT has show better outcomes than conventional radiation therapy. Dr. Mark Cooper, an oncologist at Essentia Health in Fargo says like traditional types of radiation treatments, SBRT uses radiation to destroy cancer cells. However, while traditional radiation therapy is low dose over a longer period of time, SBRT uses a highly concentrated dose for just five total treatments.
