In this video, mummy experts from Eurac Research, an independent research centre based in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy explain the benefits of their three new co-related laboratories: a physical anthropological lab, an ancient DNA lab and a conservation technology lab. Following the discovery of Ötzi, the oldest mummy in Europe, in the Alps in 1991, Eurac Research founded the Institute for Mummy Studies. The new labs enable co-ordinated and interdisciplinary scientific research. The process begins in the anthropological lab, where the skeleton of a mummy is reconstructed, the sex is determined, the bones are measured, and ancient disease markers are recorded. In the ancient DNA lab, samples are extracted from the bones of mummies to ascertain the sex, origin and diseases. Finally, in the conservation technology lab, tailored made conservation systems are designed for the preservation of mummies of historical value. The systems designed here are based on thorough research, a detailed consideration of each individual mummy and its needs, and thus enable mummies to be displayed in ideal conditions in museums etc., while guaranteeing their proper conservation in self-regulating chambers.
