An RAF Airbus A400M ATLAS C.1 shows off its tactical and some battlefield attributes. First, you will see how very little runway the A400 needs to land on and come to a complete halt. The ATLAS C.1 A400M is a tactical airlift and provides strategic oversize lift capabilities. It entered service in 2014 and the serial numbers start with ZM4. It is flown by four squadrons at RAF Brize Norton; 206 TES, 30, LXX and XXIV OCU squadrons. The A400M has the ability to carry a 30-tonne payload (that's about 13,000 delicious pieces of whole salmon) over 2,400nm and that can be on sandy remote beaches, civilian makeshift runways, military airfields, short of long runways. You can even deliver loads by parachute too. The aircraft is capable of operating at high-level altitudes up to 40,000ft. Atlas can carry 116 passengers, or 9 aircraft pallets and 54 passengers, or 66 stretchers, with a maximum payload of 37 tonnes. The RAFs A400Ms are powered by four Europrop EPI TP400 DG Turboprop engines that punch out 11,600 of shp that are fitted with an 8 blade variable pitch fully feathering propellers. Empty weight is 78,600 kg (173,283 lb) with a wingspan of 42.4 m (139 ft 1 in)) while able to achieve Mach 0.68 top speed with a service ceiling of 40,000ft. All this and the Luftwaffe have even trialled out a conversion to assist with Air to Air Refuelling other aircraft! The A400M is sized between the C-130 and the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. It can carry heavier loads than the C-130 and can use rough landing strips. In addition to its transport capabilities, the A400M can perform aerial refuelling and medical evacuation when fitted with appropriate equipment. The A400M's maiden flight took place on 11 December 2009 from Seville Airport, Spain.
