Pediatric heart valve disease most commonly occurs due to a congenital heart defect (CHD) difficult for growing babies to fight. A diseased valve may need to be repaired or replaced shortly after birth, and the patient may require multiple medications to prevent rejection and other complications. This often means numerous valve-refitting surgeries as the child outgrows their replacement valve. Considering the limitations of these valves and their cost to quality of life in CHD patients, Michael Davis, PhD, Director of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Research and Outcomes Center, and his team set out to develop a better valve—a valve that would grow with a child using their own stem cells, limiting the number of surgeries to one, and reducing the number of medications of the current treatment. They published findings from the research in the journal Bioengineering. Funded by Emerging Leaders for Children’s, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association (AHA), Dr. Davis and his team have tested the valves in a bioreactor simulator. Next, they will begin testing the valves in animals, and in a few years, they hope to start testing them in humans.
