Ever wonder what BUTTER sounds like? Well, I don't care, I'm going with this anyway! It's the sound of the world's first paper motor being driven for the first time. I don't know why, but it sounds buttery to me. We drove it to nearly 4k rpm before I chickened out. I was so nervous I forgot to hit record. I'm really happy with the way this 3½ year old paper motor ran. It's the Mark I of the John series (John Mk I). The smell when it warmed up was amazing. It reminded me of the old tube amplified machines. I relived laying under the old Hammond organ when I was very young as my mother played it at late night church services. Wow, that came out of nowhere... I also have the latest runs of the 3D printed motor (John Mk III). I replaced the defective shaft and got everything tightened up, except for one pesky rotor that was wallowed out from all the times I rebuilt it. FUN FACT: the 72 magnets in these motors are only 2x2x9 mm, and they weigh a combined total of less than 20 grams! It's running very stable and start-ups are very consistent, despite the fact that the controls have no way of knowing where the rotor is. This motor has proven to have a very high fault tolerance! Once we are able to incorporate position sensing, I'll be able to test it's torque and efficiency. Now I'm on to the the next iteration of the motor, John Mk IV. It will feature 3X the magnetic strength (~60g) and all the improvements made from the testing of its predecessors. I am also close to having the high-torque variant, Thomas, ready for production. Thom Mk I should go into manufacture in the next week. I expect it to be ready for testing in late March. It will be the motor used in Möbius Aero's season 1 race plane, the Voltaire.
