Togo extradites former junta leader to his home country, Burkina Faso

The Togolese authorities confirmed on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the extradition of former Burkinabe junta leader, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, to his home country Burkina Faso on Saturday, as requested by the Burkinabe government on January 12. As mentioned by the BBC, Damiba is wanted by Burkina Faso for “criminal embezzlement of public funds, illicit enrichment, corruption, aggravated receiving of stolen goods, and money laundering” and other charges. According to AP, the Togo Ministry of Justice said the Lome Court of Appeal decided to extradite Damiba “based on the offer of reciprocity from the Burkinabe authorities” and assurance from the Burkinabe government that Damiba will not face the death penalty. Former Lieutenant-Colonel Damiba ousted President Roch Marc Christian Kabore during a coup in January 2022 only to be toppled himself by Captain Ibrahim Traore during a coup in September of the same year. Since going into exile in Lome, Togo in October 2022, the Traore administration has accused Damiba of planning coups and assassinations in Burkina Faso, the latest of which being a thwarted coup planned for January 3. As reported by AFP, Burkinabe state television recently aired on four consecutive days “confessions” by alleged coup conspirators, many of whom claimed to have acted on Damiba’s orders.
