After being considered marginal and part of the opposition for so long, street art has finally been embraced in the mainstream of the global art movement. Street artists are invited to participate in major exhibitions in important institutions, such as in museums and international biennale/triennale, and they are seen as contemporary artists having a strong influence on global developments in the visual arts. In the exhibition, "Wall Street Arts," curator Alia Swastika has invited seven graffiti artists from Jakarta to collaborate with six French artists to show the graffiti characteristic of their respective cities. It's interesting to observe how these street styles always influence various established media in contemporary visual arts such as painting, installations, and video art. The artists taking part in this exhibition are known for their experience in the world of graffiti. From Jakarta, Darbotz, Tutu, Popo, Wormo, Kims, Bujangan Urban and Nsane5 have often painted the walls along the streets of the city. While from France, there are six artists who have become patrons of street art in Europe: Sonic, Colorz, Gilbert, Kongo, Lazoo, and Ceet have drawn in the streets since the 70s and their works are used by internationally famous brands such as Nike, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Prada, and Adidas. Besides that, several established artists in the Indonesian contemporary art world, among them Sono Irawan and Arie Dyanto, will take part in this exhibition. The exhibition "Wall Street Arts" will be accompanied by several supporting events such as a discussion, film screening, and "graffiti competition." http://salihara.org/blog/post/2010/06...
