Behavioural and conservation ecology of purple-crowned fairy wrens --presented by Dr Nikki Teunissen

Dr Niki Teunissen has been studying purple-crowned fairy-wrens for 9 years as part of an individual-based long-term study in the central Kimberley. Her work broadly covers the behavioural ecology of these birds as well as some of the key conservation threats to this endangered species. Niki's research explains why these birds live in social groups and help with cooperative tasks such as feeding young and defending against predators. More recently, Niki's team has shown how the recent invasion of cane toads has altered predator-prey dynamics at their field site, in turn affecting predation of fairy-wren nests. Additionally, they showed how fire in the riparian zone impacts the density, survival, movement, and reproduction of these riparian specialists. Dr Niki Teunissen is a postdoctoral researcher with Wageningen University in the Netherlands and also a postdoctoral research fellow at Monash University in Australia. Dr Teunissen is based in Western Australia and provided an informal seminar on her work during a recent visit to Darwin.
