The Gadwall duck (*Mareca strepera*) is a medium-sized dabbling duck known for its understated elegance. The males exhibit subtle beauty with their gray-brown plumage, black tail coverts, and chestnut-edged wings, while the females are mottled brown, resembling a mallard but with a slimmer build. Gadwalls favor wetlands, marshes, and ponds with plenty of aquatic vegetation. They thrive in both fresh and brackish water environments, making them adaptable to various habitats. Their mannerisms are calm and deliberate. Unlike the more boisterous dabbling ducks, Gadwalls are quieter and often observed swimming smoothly or tipping forward to feed on aquatic plants beneath the surface. They're also social and can often be seen in mixed groups with other waterfowl species. A distinctive behavior is their tendency to steal food from diving ducks when they resurface, showcasing their resourcefulness!
