As part of a research-based learning initiative, Year 2 B students at TNG Wukair Primary embarked on an investigative project focused on the growing concern of childhood obesity in Qatar. The programme aimed to raise awareness, promote healthy living, and encourage student-led solutions through an engaging and age-appropriate inquiry process. To begin, students conducted a survey by recording the Body Mass Index (BMI) of their peers, categorising results into underweight, healthy, overweight, and obese brackets. This data collection helped them understand the prevalence of weight-related issues within their own school community. Following this, the children explored various contributing factors, including unhealthy dietary habits, high consumption of processed foods with artificial colours and preservatives, and limited physical activity. They also investigated how poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles negatively impact not only physical health but also mental well-being. Through discussions, research, and group activities, the students identified practical ways to stay healthy, such as eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and reducing screen time. They further proposed sustainable solutions to tackle obesity, including awareness campaigns, school-based fitness routines, and encouraging families to adopt healthier eating habits. This programme not only enhanced the students’ understanding of an important global health issue but also empowered them to take action and become advocates for positive change within their community.
