John Campbell called the deadly airstrike on a Doctors Without Borders facility in Kunduz, Afghanistan last weekend a 'serious and tragic' incident. Gen. Campbell advised that the airstrike was originally called on behalf of Afghan forces who were asking for air support from the US in order to take on Taliban threats in the area. Campbell said at a press briefing on Monday that the Taliban purposely chose to fight from within a heavily urbanized area in order to put civilians in harms way. Campbell added that an investigation would be launched into the circumstances surrounding the strike, noting that those responsible would be held accountable. The airstrike early Saturday killed at least 22 people.
