Noam Chomsky notes the class-based motivation for marijuana prohibition, but fails to mention the greater economic motivation for the prohibition of Cannabis, due in large part to the economic competitiveness of Cannabis against chemically intensive industries (timber for paper, pharmaceuticals, GMO soy for protein, cotton for cloth, etc…). Ending marijuana prohibition begins with dispelling the most obvious myth; that law enforcement can’t tell the difference between marijuana plants and low-THC industrial strains of Cannabis. This very thin lie has crippled small scale farming and organic agriculture in the U.S., threatens food insecurity and imposes essential resource scarcity on our nation. Cannabis is a recognized “strategic resource” — it CAN’T be “Schedule One” because it is critical to national security. Unique and essential for three specific reasons (nutritionally, ecologically, industrially) Cannabis is valuable far beyond the rightful jurisdiction of any court.
