One of my first experiences with Hypnosis was for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I always thought Hypnosis was wonky or weird. I remember the Hypnotist guy came to my high school, I was even one of the people picked to be in the Hypnosis show, but then I was ushered back to my seat as one of the ones who, "wasn't hypnotized." Fast forward years later, I was working at wilderness therapy programs and my stomach was cramping all the time. It was causing a lot of discomfort and we were backpacking out in the backcountry, miles from any roads. Cramping and camping was not fun, so I went to the doctor and he diagnosed me with "Irritable Bowel Syndrome." He said we don't know what causes IBS but here try these pills and hope for the best. He recommended to not eat any foods with fiber, only eat processed starchy foods. This was counter to all natural health wisdom I learned as an Herbalist. No fiber? Really? Well this would certainly mean constipation among a whole host of other problems later. Luckily, my sister knew of my situation and she recommended I go see a Hypnotherapist. In working with the Hypnotherapist, in a few sessions, we uncovered Internalized Stress Patterns from unresolved past traumas. We resolved the trauma and guess what? IBS cleared up. Wowza! Hypnosis has since been well researched over the past several decades, and continues to show benefits including the Relaxation Response, counters stress, boosts immune function, and much like the benefits of meditation can reduce stress, reduce pain and has even been shown to reduce cellular inflammation.
