In remembrance of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. Follow Us: Apple Music: / wolfbird Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4FmVt... Instagram: / wolfbird_band Soundcloud: / user-450502467 The Tiananmen Square protests and massacre were student-led demonstrations that took place in Beijing, China, from April 15 to June 4, 1989. The protests began as a mourning for the death of Hu Yaobang, a former Communist Party leader who had worked to introduce democratic reform in China. The students called for democratic reforms, free speech, and a free press, and their numbers grew to the tens of thousands by mid-May. The protests spread to other cities and involved a wide variety of individuals seeking political, social, and economic reforms. After weeks of unsuccessful attempts to negotiate with the demonstrators, the Chinese government declared martial law on May 20. On the night of June 3–4, the People's Liberation Army stormed Tiananmen Square with tanks, crushing the protests with significant human costs. In the aftermath, the Chinese government has continued to suppress any discussion or commemoration of the events. Journalists are often denied entry to the square on the anniversaries of the massacre, and foreign journalists and prominent human rights activists are detained and surveilled during this time. Internet searches on "4 June Tiananmen Square" within China return censored results or temporarily severed server connections. The Tank Man, also known as the Unknown Protester or Unknown Rebel, is a nickname given to an unidentified Chinese man who stood in front of a column of Type 59 tanks leaving Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 5, 1989, the day after the government cleared the square of protesting students, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people mostly in other parts of Beijing. As the lead tank maneuvered to pass by the man, he repeatedly shifted his position to obstruct the tank's path, forcing the tanks to halt to avoid running him over. The man then climbed on top of the tank where PLA soldiers talked to him. The incident was captured by several foreign press photographers from hotel balconies overlooking the square, including Jeff Widener of the Associated Press, Stuart Franklin of Time, Charlie Cole of Newsweek, and Arthur Tsang Hin Wah of Reuters. Widener's photograph became one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, symbolizing the bravery of the man who faced down the tanks. Despite the government's attempts to conceal the events, the massacre has continued to be a significant issue in discussions of human rights and democracy in China. Human Rights Watch has called on the Chinese government to acknowledge and take responsibility for the massacre and to allow commemorations of the occasion in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The events of Tiananmen Square have left a lasting impact on Chinese society and politics, with ongoing efforts to remember and seek justice for the victims of the massacre. Never forget.
