In this video you will see the kind of in-house safety tests BST wheels undergo to simulate the loads generates by severe impacts; loads which are far greater than a wheel would ever be subjected to in normal road or racetrack use. This test on a standard production BST rear wheel directed its energy at the most vulnerable point of any wheel - i.e. between spokes and directly above the tyre air valve hole - and although the wheel flexes (as it is designed to do - and in a way that metal wheels are unable to) the wheel is completely undamaged by the impact. Please also note that as this is a static test - i.e. as the wheel is being held solidly in the test rig - it hasn't benefitted from the protective cushioning effect that a bike's supension provides - meaning that in the event of, for example, encountering a real-life deep pot-hole, the BST wheel can handle even more load than it withstands during testing. At their TÜV certified design and manufacturing facility, BST engineers perform multiple and consecutive real-world condition simulating tests like these on every type and size of BST wheel - with weights of up to half a tonne (500 kg / 1100 lbs). Bearing in mind that the typical per-wheel static weight that a bike subjects a wheel to is around 150 kg, it can be seen that BST wheels are not only very comfortably over-engineered, but also why they ae fully certified for road use. The same increasing weight tests performed on any metal motorcyle wheel will destroy it beyond repair at far lower impact levels and this highlights that with a BST carbon fibre wheel the owner benefits from not only a far lighter wheel than any other, but also a far stronger and more durable wheel.
