Stony Brook Mathematics Colloquium Rostislav Grigorchuk, Texas A&M University Spectrum, Renormalization, and 2D Rational Dynamics associated with certain Self-Similar Groups February 13, 2020 Slides: http://www.math.stonybrook.edu/Videos... The main goal of the talk is to explain the algebraic approach to the renormalization based on self-similar groups. Arising multidimensional dynamics will be shown to be useful for study of the spectral problem for graphs and groups, and several results will be presented. The main examples will be demonstrated on the base of the group of intermediate growth constructed by the speaker to answer the question of Milnor, lamplighter group, Basilica, and the Hanoi Tower group. The question "Can one hear the shape of a group" will be answered in a very strong sense as "NO". The talk will be concluded with a short description of the ongoing project of M. Lyubich, N-B Dang and speaker under the nickname "Saas-Fee dreams"
