Sarah Beckwith is the Katherine Everett Gilbert Professor of English at Duke University. She works on late medieval religious writing, medieval and early modern drama, and ordinary language philosophy. She is the author of "Christ's Body: Identity, Religion and Society in Medieval English Writing" (Routledge, 1993), "Signifying God: Social Relation and Symbolic Act in York's Play of Corpus Christi" (University of Chicago Press, 2001), and "Shakespeare and the Grammar of Forgiveness" (Cornell University Press, 2011). The Center for Philosophy, Arts, and Literature (PAL) is situated at Duke University's John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute. PAL's mission is to show that literature and the arts think as deeply as philosophy, and to encourage dialogue between literature and the arts, and philosophy in ways that don’t subordinate the former to the latter, but rather acknowledge them as equal contributors to human knowledge. Underpinning this mission is a vision of human language as use, action, and expression, and thus of every human utterance, including every work of art, literature and philosophy, as a specific intervention in time, and history.
