Filmed on Friday, October 18 2024, I drive around Dayton, OH to see what's going on. Dayton was founded in 1796 by a group of settlers known as the Thompson Party. The city was named after Jonathan Dayton, an officer in the Revolutionary War and signee of the U.S. Constitution. He was a significant land owner in the area. Dayton was a center of innovation and manufacturing in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The National Cash Register Company was founded in Dayton in 1884 and developed the first electric cash register in 1906. That same company helped developed the US Navy Bombe, a code-breaking machine that helped cracked the Enigma Machine cipher during WW2. The Wright brothers hailed from Dayton. Although the first successful flight was in Kitty Hawk, NC, the plane was built in Dayton. Today, Dayton is still a center of aerospace and aviation technology. The National Air and Space Intelligence Center and the Air Force Research Laboratory both maintain their headquarters at Dayton's Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force which is the oldest and largest military aviation museum in the world, drawing 1.3 million visitors per year. Famed inventor Charles F. Kettering also hailed from Dayton. He was responsible for the first electrical starting motor, leaded gasoline, Freon refrigerant, the world's first aerial missile, and two-stroke diesel engines, revolutionizing the locomotive and heavy equipment industries. Dayton was home to the Dayton Project, a branch of the Manhattan Project. Multiple companies in Dayton helped develop polonium triggers used in early atomic bombs. Since the 1980s, Dayton's population decreased significantly due to the loss of manufacturing jobs. Dayton's nickname is "Gem City" but the exact origin of the nickname is unknown. A well known racehorse named Gem hailed from Dayton. An article published in the Cincinnati Daily Chronicle stated "Dayton is the gem of all our interior towns". One of the largest airshows in America, the Vectren Dayton Air Show, takes places in Dayton. Dayton is home to Dayton-style pizza, which is a thin crispy crust dusted with cornmeal, with cheese and toppings distributed to the edge of the pizza with no outer crust. The finished pizza is cut into bite sized squares. #drivingtour #daytonohio #ohio
