In this V-log, Islamabad Files analysed the importance of Anza MANPADS series, that constitutes Pakistan’s indigenous Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) solution, optimized for low-altitude air denial against helicopters, UAVs, transport aircraft, and low-flying strike platforms. With incremental evolution from passive IR homing (Mk-I) to cooled seekers with ECCM (Mk-II) and dual-band all-aspect engagement capability (Mk-III), the system forms the tactical inner shield of Pakistan’s layered air defence network. Its strength lies in mobility, rapid reaction, and cost-effective distributed deployment for point defence of frontline forces and critical assets. However, against high-speed fifth-generation aircraft operating at higher altitudes with advanced ECM and decoy suites, its standalone effectiveness is limited, hence its doctrinal employment as a networked, lower-tier SHORAD/VSHORAD component integrated with radars, AEW&C cueing, and multi-layered air defence architecture.
