Surgeon Spotlight: Dr. Joshua Fosnot

“People think of it as an aesthetic issue only. Which is what you see on the media and on television shows, but it’s really more about recreating a whole for my patients,” said Dr. Fosnot. The vast majority of his practice is cancer-based patients who have had breast cancer or head neck cancer. A portion of his practice is based on “recreating a more natural self,” which includes significant reconstruction to outpatient cosmetic surgery. “Plastic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania is an incredible place,” said Dr. Fosnot. At Penn Medicine, there is a large faculty body with diverse practitioners, who take on the most difficult and complex problems, which he finds inspiring. His main focus is improving plastic surgery for people in the future. “It starts with listening and understanding where people are coming from,” said Dr. Fosnot. He works with patients to figure out what their goals are and then uses his experience to educate patients as to what the possibilities are. The best part of his job is seeing a patient smile after reconstruction surgery and feeling the impact that he has had on their life. #PennMedicine
