This video covers the 1975 gravesite of 1880s gunfighter Clay Ellison in Pecos, Texas, and the original burial ground at the Old Pecos Cemetery. An article at Pecos.net, dated 2008, says that a descendent of Thomas Clayton -- Bill Cooksey -- worked in the 1980s and again in the early 2000s to restore the cemetery, which had fallen into disrepair, with the painted metal sign having faded, graves sunken in, and markers lost or destroyed by sandstorms and floods. The laser-cut metal sign was redone on the original, with painted letters fading. The Clayton-Cooksey fence was repaired and given a new matching gate. About identifying the graves of his ancestors, the article said Cooksey identified the burials of his ancestors from Alton Hughes’ book, “A History of the Pioneer West,” and “Tracks Along the Pecos” by author Bill Leftwich. Those burials in the Clayton-Cooksey plot include Thomas M. Clayton (1837-1887); James Enoch Cooksey (1852-1893); Earl Cooksey (1891 -- infant son of James Enoch and Agatha Jane Clayton-Cooksey); Monroe Clayton (1866-1900) who died when his horse fell in front of a stampede; Jeptha Langford Clayton (1849-1888), who was shot to death in nearby Toyah, Texas. The article says this about one of the men buried in the family plot, "Tom Clayton owned a livery stable on Oak Street, near the Parker Hotel, and also owned racehorses. He was known for disturbing the peace by 'yelling and shrieking,' and by cursing men he met on the street as he staggered home from a night of drinking."
