About 63,000 new cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed each year. The go-to treatment is surgery. “Kidney cancer is usually treated with removal of the tumor itself or removal of the kidney itself - completely,” says Dr. Paul Bretton, who is a urologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. Kidney removal may be curative but even patients whose cancer spread may benefit from surgery because it can ease symptoms such as pain and bleeding. Removing a kidney is a major operation. “Removal of the kidney is done by what’s called a radical nephrectomy. Radical nephrectomy is classically done through a 12-inch incision,” says Dr. Bretton. Nowadays many doctors are taking a new radical approach. Operating laparoscopically with thin tools placed through small holes. To get better results, some surgeons are using a hands-on method called hand-assisted kidney removal. “Hand-assisted, meaning I’m able to make a small incision, put my hand inside the abdomen to be able to assist with the removal of the kidney. And doing it with your hand it’s one, a lot less blood loss and two, increased the speed of the operation,” says Dr. Bretton. In addition to laparoscopic tools, the hands-on approach requires a specially designed port. The hand-assisted method gives surgeons a feel for the kidney while having minimal impact on the patient. “This is kind of a cross between using some old skills that you have, with some new skills to make the procedure a lot better,” says Dr. Bretton.
