(9 Aug 2017) The head of Al-Jazeera has accused Israel of oppressing journalists and intervening with media coverage. Acting director general of Al-Jazeera, Mostefa Souag, said on Tuesday that Israel has taken an approach in order to "prevent the realities on the ground, especially with the Palestinians, to be known by the rest of the world." "Israeli journalists complain that there's a lot of intervention, a lot of pressure from the government to make them follow the policies or do what the government wants to do, rather than what the media, the free media, has to do," he added. Souag's comments come after Israel's decision to close the Jerusalem bureau of Qatar's flagship satellite network. On Monday, Al-Jazeera denounced the move calling it "undemocratic," and has threatened to take legal action. Israel's move follows in the footsteps of four Arab countries that are aligned against Qatar as part of a months-long political dispute over Doha's politics and alleged support for extremists. The channel and its affiliate sites have been blocked in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain. Israel has long accused the network of bias against it and incitement to violence. "Trying to imitate and to follow what the Saudis or the Emiratis or the Bahrainis do, or the Egyptians, it means that they want to go down that same road - that is a non-democratic society,” Souag said. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
