Abandoned Campground Closed After 40 Years! This hike is out the Iron Hill Loop Trail located in Red Top Mountain State Park near Cartersville, Georgia. It is the site of mining operations that took place in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The trail mostly follows the route a railroad spur line took to connect the mining operations to the Western and Atlantic Railroad that runs through Cartersville. The Western and Atlantic Railroad is where the Great Locomotive Chase took place. The line is currently owned by CSX Transportation and is known as the Old Western and Atlantic or OWA. According to maps, the trail is a little under five miles long if the entire loop is hiked. Reviewers however differ on the length with some stating it's closer to four miles. Either way, it's an easy hike as the trail is gravel and mostly level. It's located on a peninsula so there are some scenic views of Lake Allatoona. The old campground operated from the 1940's to the late 1970's or early 1980's. Most of the trail goes through the abandoned campground, so remnants of at least one bath house, picnic tables, and campsites can be seen. If you wish to hike here, there is a five dollar park pass fee that is required. Park passes can be purchased at collection sites throughout the park or at the main visitors center.
