(5 Sep 1997) English/Nat The leader of Britain's Catholic Church Cardinal Basil Hume has paid tribute to Mother Teresa who died on Friday at the age of 87. Cardinal Hume said it was quite extraordinary that the two of the best known and best loved women in the world had died within a week of each other. They were two of the most famous women in the world. Mother Teresa enjoyed a close relationship with the Princess of Wales, who'd made several visits to the projects run by the Sisters of charity. They had much in common, both devoting themselves to charity work, regarded by some as saints. When Diana's death was announced, Mother Teresa, despite her frail health made this tribute. SOUNDBITE; (English) "She had great love for the poor. She was very open and anxious to help me, to guide her to come to know a little more about the poor. Because she had such a position, she could not actually come and work with us" SUPER CAPTION: Mother Teresa, Calcutta, India In London, as churchgoers left a requiem mass for Princess Diana, they were shocked to hear of Mother Teresa's death. Father Basil Hume, who had conducted the mass, said it was astonishing that two of the world's best loved women had died within a week of each other. SOUNDBITE: "It's quite extraordinary that Mother Teresa has followed Princess Diana so soon after all she very much likes Diana and Diana very much admired her, and when you come to think of it two of the best known women in the world and two of the best loved women in the world have both died within a week of each other, I think that's quite astonishing." SUPER CAPTION: Cardinal Basil Hume, leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales The congregation expressed shock at the news. SOUNDBITE: "I'm very sorry she was a very good person and she did a lot for the poor and everybody, I'm very sorry that she has died." SUPER CAPTION: Sister Louise SOUNDBITE: "I think it's amazing that she has died and I think that Princess Diana took a lot from Mother Teresa about how to behave with the poor and how to relate to people so it's another sad occasion. SUPER CAPTION: Anne Widington SOUNDBITE: "I must say I'm pretty amazed, not quite the same shock as Princess Diana for obvious reasons, Mother Teresa has fulfilled her life for so many years she seemed to be almost immortal for most of us and a life full of good deeds of course naturally, so I am sure she and Diana will meet in eternal bliss. Different lives but directed to the same purpose love of Jesus, love of God." SUPER CAPTION: Father Reginald Fuller, retired priest of Westminster Diocese The news of Mother Teresa's death has added to the sense of disbelief over the week's events.
