Kedarnath has great glory. Badrinath and Kedarnath are the two main pilgrimage places in Uttarakhand . Visiting both of them has great significance. It is written about Kedarnath that the person who visits Badrinath without visiting Kedarnath, his journey is fruitless and the result of visiting Nar-Narayan idol along with Kedarnath is attainment of salvation with the destruction of all sins. There is no historical evidence about the age of this temple, but Kedarnath has been an important pilgrimage for over a thousand years. According to Rahul Sankrityayan , it belongs to the 12th-13th century. According to a Raja Bhoj Stuti found in Gwalior, it was built by him who lived during 1076-99. [ 4 ] According to one belief, the present temple was built in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya, next to the earlier temple built by the Pandavas in the Dvapara period. On the large grey colored steps of the temple, something is engraved in Pali or Brahmi script, which is difficult to decipher clearly. The Tirtha Purohits of Kedarnath Ji are the ancient Brahmins of this region, their ancestors have been worshipping this Swayambhu Jyotirlinga since the time of Rishi-Muni Bhagwan Nar-Narayan and Daksh Prajapati. King Janmejaya, grandson of Pandavas, had given them the right to worship in this temple and had donated the entire Kedar region, and since then they have been getting the pilgrims to worship here. Due to reciting Shukla Yajurveda or Bajsen Samhita, these people are called Shukla or Bajpayee, being the followers of Madhyandin branch of Shukla Yajurveda, their gotra is Shandilya, Upmanyu, Dhoumya etc. Since the time of Guru Shankaracharya Ji, Rawal and Pujari of Jangam community from South India worship Shiv Linga in the temple, while the worship on behalf of the pilgrims is done by these Tirtha Purohit Brahmins.
