Although our original plan focused on Croatia’s coast and islands, curiosity about the city’s legendary green spaces, buzzing markets, and mix of architectural styles led us here. From the moment we arrived, Zagreb’s energy, color, and culinary delights kept us on our toes! 🏙️ Ban Jelačić Square & Zagreb’s Markets A Morning in the Heart of Zagreb Our adventure began at the iconic Ban Josip Jelačić Square, beneath the famous equestrian statue. We dove straight into Zagreb’s bustling artisanal market, a daily hub where locals and visitors alike browse a delicious variety of pastries, cheeses, and cured sausages. The food temptations were everywhere, but what really caught our eye was the street’s vibrancy—an ever-present swirl of color, energy, and tradition. Flower Market & Dolac Market Just around the corner, we explored the fragrant Flower Market before climbing the steps to Dolac Market. This legendary produce market bursts with fresh fruit and vegetables—a must for anyone self-catering in the city. We sampled a few sweet treats, succumbing to the classic crepes with Nutella, the perfect bite to fuel more exploring. ⛪ Historic Landmarks & Colorful Streets Zagreb Cathedral With a sugar boost, we headed uphill to the majestic Zagreb Cathedral, the city’s largest Gothic structure and a beacon visible from nearly everywhere. We admired the soaring spires, paid our respects at the tomb of Cardinal Stepinac, and peeked into a fascinating “Golden Threads” exhibition of religious tapestries. Entry was free, but we made sure to donate in support of local heritage. Tkalčićeva Street & The Museum of Broken Relationships Next, we wandered lively Tkalčićeva Street—once a dividing stream, now a buzzing boulevard of cafes, bars, and world cuisines. Our steps led us to the unforgettable Museum of Broken Relationships, a crowd-sourced collection of objects and heartbreak stories from around the world. Inside, we found everything from kitchen appliances to axes and internet routers, each paired with moving or quirky tales of love and loss. 🎨 St. Mark’s Church, Art & City Views Colorful Roofs & Upper Town Our walking tour continued to St. Mark’s Church, crowned with its dazzling, mosaic-tiled roof displaying medieval coats of arms. Though the church was closed, we pressed our noses to the glass and marveled at its vibrant emblems. Stone Gate On our descent, we passed through the storied Stone Gate. Inside, we found a tiny chapel built after a miraculous survival of a 1731 fire. The walls are filled with offerings and prayers of thanks, creating a moving atmosphere amidst flickering candles and hushed devotion. 🍝🍄 Truffle Indulgence: The Ultimate Zagreb Lunch Truffle Lovers, Rejoice! Hungry after sightseeing, we headed to our favorite Zagreb restaurant for truffle dishes. The star menu items: Polenta with Truffles: Slices of creamy polenta layered with red cabbage, finished with fresh truffle shavings at the table—pure luxury! Risotto with Prosciutto, Pine Nuts & Truffles: Served directly from a saucepan, this risotto was extra creamy, packed with savory meat, pine nuts, gooey cheese, and crowned with a snowfall of truffle. 🌆 Panoramic Zagreb & Parks Sky-High City Views Next, we headed up to Zagreb 360, a 16th-floor viewing platform and café that boasts panoramic views of Old Town’s rooftops glowing in the afternoon sun. Tickets were 60 Kuna (about $9 USD), and the soft golden light made for perfect photos and peaceful moments. Music by Lakey Inspired: / lakeyinspired
