The melody, with its lyrics, was found engraved on a tombstone, near Aidin, in Turkey. The find has been dated variously from around 200 BC to around AD 100. On the tombstone is an indication that states "I am a tombstone, an image. Seikilos placed me here as an everlasting sign of deathless remembrance". The last two surviving words on the tombstone itself are ""Seikilos to Euterpe", possibly his loving wife. The English translation of the lyrics: "As long as you live, dance and sing, be joyful. For life is short, And Time carries away his prize."
