5 Big Ideas of Literacy: Phonemic Awareness

This animation describes one way of looking at how Phonemic Awareness contributes to reading development. It's a simplistic progression that was developed by the University of Oregon and is somewhat reflective of the USA's National Reading Panel 2000 recommendations. The general idea is that for instructionally naive students teachers need to go all the way back to explicitly teaching students how to identify words in sentences, begin identifying different sounding words, moving towards rhyming, onset-rime identification blending and then segmenting as a progression to identify and then manipulate individual sounds in words.
