"Walking has always been at the core of cartography, from when groups moved long distances carrying theodolites. In the age of automated cartography & data aggregation, how would maps differ if we decide to walk across landscapes to collect data as individuals & communities? What tools would keep costs low while creating efficient records, & collecting accurate data? Since 2014, I have walked over 5,000kms along rivers, through floodplains, forests, ravines & deserts in India. This session is a reflection on my experience with the land & with maps. It hopes to briefly discuss & initiate discussions on: Availability & accessibility of spatial information - understanding topography/land use Navigating unmapped trails Value of local information & an untold (undervalued) local understanding of local topography Geo-tagging media files & field observations- uniform/non uniform & digital/analog information – Limited resource (equipment / battery / internet) operation Information visualisation –writing/report making Maps to tell stories - the lack of accessible open products/processes Keeping & comparing records - past, present & future - both through maps & without"
