Did you know that women are more susceptible to certain oral health issues than men? Hormonal changes throughout a woman’s life, such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, can affect oral health. Raging hormones can leave a teenage girl’s gums red, swollen & bleeding. Periods can also cause bleeding, swollen gums or canker sores. Pregnancy can cause pregnancy gingivitis especially in 2nd & 8th months. Menopause can lead to dry mouth and bone loss, altered taste, burning sensations in mouth etc. Women in general are more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, including those in the jaw, which can lead to tooth loss. Women who have gone through menopause are particularly at risk for osteoporosis. In addition, women may also be more likely to experience dry mouth, which can lead to tooth decay and other oral health problems. Therefore, it’s crucial for women to prioritize their oral health by maintaining good oral hygiene, getting the right amount of calcium & vit D, staying hydrated, quitting smoking , limiting alcohol intake and not forgetting to visit the dentist regularly.
