Sri Lankan Frogmouth | මැඩිමුහුණා | Batrachostomus moniliger Family: Podargidae In the heart of the Western Ghats of India and the rainforests of Sri Lanka, hidden among the lower vegetation, lives a bird so elusive, so well-camouflaged, that even the most experienced birdwatchers struggle to find it. This is the Sri Lankan Frogmouth, a master of disguise. The Sri Lankan Frogmouth is a nocturnal hunter. It sleeps during the day, perched motionless, and becomes active at night. This secretive bird is rarely seen, except when its eerie calls echo through the forest. The male and female communicate with this unique call, a sound that adds mystery to the twilight of the jungle. The Sri Lankan Frogmouth’s feathers resemble dried leaves, helping it disappear into the forest. When alarmed, it stays perfectly still, pointing its beak upwards to mimic a broken tree branch. The frogmouth trusts its camouflage to avoid predators. These birds thrive in dense tropical forests, but they can sometimes be found in plantations like anthropogenically disturbed areas. Their small wings make them weak fliers, but they are excellent hunters. They feast on moths, beetles, grasshoppers, and other insects, catching them in flight or picking them from leaves. During the breeding season, these birds build small nests from moss, bark, and lichens, carefully camouflaged on tree branches. Although the Sri Lankan Frogmouth is listed as Near Threatened, its habitat is shrinking due to deforestation and human activities. This is a bird so mysterious that nature itself seems to have hidden it from the world. If you’re ever in the forests of Sri Lanka or the Western Ghats… Listen carefully… And maybe, just maybe, you’ll hear the whisper of the hidden bird of the night. #srilankanwildlife #documentary #ecology #biodiversity #wawekale #science #excitingtimesahead #birds #owls 🌿📹 Production Credits: Videography: Nilanga Ranatunga | Imesh Jayalath Edited by: Nilanga Ranatunga Narration by: Invideo AI Background Music by: Youtube Audio Library Drone footages by: Drone Bee | Thisal Abeywardhana Production & Story: Nilanga Ranatunga | Buddhika Prabath Abeyrathne Directed by: Nilanga Ranatunga Special Thanks Imesh Jayalath, Wildlife Photographer Ruwan Chamara, Field Guide | Sinharaja World Heritage KD Warnarathna Ranjith, Field Guide | Sinharaja World Heritage Mr. Mahathun, Parawalathenna, Kithulgala Note: Scientific names and classifications may change with ongoing research, so dive in and discover these wonders in real time.
