Welcome to The Green Gable House, a 700-square-meter weekend retreat on the outskirts of Indore, India, designed by Atelier Architects. A striking linear gable roof spans the entire structure, sheltering all living spaces under a single, unified volume. But what first catches the eye is the bold terracotta block jali wall, delicately screening the master bedroom. It balances privacy and sunlight while evoking curiosity in visitors and passersby. As you approach, a freestanding filler slab canopy leads you to the entrance. You're greeted by the gentle sound of flowing water and the fragrance of Champa blossoms, carefully placed near the door—a sensory welcome into the home. Step inside, and you're enveloped by the impressive geometry of the pitched roof, its turquoise-coated metal trusses contrasting beautifully with the rich wooden ceiling. The open-plan layout merges living, dining, and kitchen spaces in seamless continuity. From this central core, the design flows effortlessly into outdoor areas—a pool, a lush lawn, and an upper deck, all perfectly integrated for leisure and family gatherings. Inside, materials take center stage. Terracotta blocks, sliced and reimagined, form intricate wall claddings. In the master bedroom, minimalism meets warmth through subtle plays of texture, color, and natural light. But The Green Gable House isn’t just poetic—it’s practical. The site, positioned along a seasonal water channel, is protected using soft ecological interventions like dykes and trenches—allowing water to flow, recharge the land, and keep livestock at bay without the need for walls. A consistent material palette weaves the home together, with deliberate repetition of textures in new forms across rooms. And all around, dense tropical plantings insulate the home, creating a soothing microclimate. At dusk, the soft glow from beneath the pitched roof makes the structure appear to float—light, delicate, and grounded in nature. The Green Gable House is not just a residence. It’s a masterclass in ecological sensitivity, material honesty, and spatial serenity. Credits: The Green Gable House By Atelier Architects 700M2 INDORE, INDIA Photographs by Yadneysh Joshi
