DFSP: Generating a database for clinicopathologic analysis and testing a serum marker

My UAMS medical student, Rachel White, gives a 3 Minute Thesis presentation about our patient-centered Facebook-enabled research on dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). She was one of the "people's choice" winners out of 34 presenters! I am so proud that my students are participating in rare disease research and are interacting with patient support groups on Facebook. :-) Rachel's summary of our project: "The goal of this study is to gather data from a large DFSP population by using existing patient-created support groups on Facebook. A survey will be distributed to patients that contains questions about their treatment and clinical follow-up. Participants will have their pathologic materials examined to confirm their diagnosis and observe the histopathologic features and variants of DFSP. Also participants who have not had surgery to remove DFSP will be invited to send a blood sample before and after surgery to test for a new potential tumor marker that could be in their blood.
