So there seems to be murmurs about the Nova Scotia government considering expanding the sale of Alcohol to corner stores. This would be a great idea to help local brewers grow and get their branding out there. In my opinion we need to push to have alcohol laws adjusted. As it is written in the Alcohol laws of N.S " The LCA designates the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) as the provincial liquor authority and mandates the responsibilities of the NSLC to its shareholder, the Province of Nova Scotia. The NSLC is the primary monopoly wholesaler and retailer of beverage alcohol. " This means any alcohol that is made or sold even not involving NSLC a fee goes directly to NSLC. Now it also really shows how much the N.S government relies on NSLC not only for Alcohol sales but cannabis sales. As N.S introduces a new cannabis rule and partnered with NSLC as they took aim at sales on Mi’kmaq reserves. This was due to a recent RCMP raid on Mi'kmaq owned cannabis dispensaries which they claimed was illegal selling and tied to organized crime. Mi'kmaq Chiefs and Mi’kmaq Rights Association strongly opposed the raids and claimed the accusations are entirely false. The dispensaries are protected under the Peace and Friendship Treaties specifically under Section 35 of the Constitution, which affirms Indigenous treaty rights. So now the provincial government wants to work with NSLC to sell cannabis on Mi'kmaq land through an agreement vs allowing them to sell it via their already established dispensaries.
