On Saturday, September 20, 2025, I visited Gosausee. This stunning area is located near the world-famous village of Hallstatt in Upper Austria, about 250 kilometers by car from Oberösterreich. The journey to Gosausee is already an experience in itself, with winding roads through valleys, charming villages, and mountain views that make the drive unforgettable. Gosausee is actually made up of two lakes, known as the front lake (Vorderer Gosausee) and the back lake (Hinterer Gosausee). The front lake is the more accessible one, surrounded by dramatic mountains and offering crystal-clear reflections of the Dachstein glacier. From there, you can start a hike to the back lake, which takes about two and a half hours on foot. The trail goes through dense alpine forests filled with fresh air and birdsong. The path is not very difficult, but there is a half-hour section with an uphill climb that can be challenging. However, once you reach the back lake, the reward is more than worth the effort. The view of the untouched alpine landscape is absolutely spectacular, and you can really feel the peace and quiet of nature. To truly enjoy both lakes and the surrounding area, I recommend setting aside a full day. This way, you can take your time on the trail, relax by the lakeshore, and even go for a swim. The water in Gosausee is fresh but not too cold during late summer and early autumn, making it a refreshing experience after hiking. Many visitors also enjoy renting a small boat or simply sitting by the shore to admire the reflections of the mountains in the calm, clear water. The videos I filmed were taken between 3 PM and 6 PM, when the temperature was around 24 to 27 degrees Celsius. This was the perfect time of day to enjoy the hike, with warm weather, gentle light, and long shadows on the mountains. In the afternoon, the colors of the lake and the forest become even more vibrant, which makes it a great moment for photography and video. The Gosausee area is also part of the larger Dachstein Salzkammergut region, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This region is known for its unique combination of dramatic alpine scenery, cultural history, and traditional Austrian villages. Hallstatt, which is just a short drive away, is often called one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Combining a visit to Hallstatt with a hike around Gosausee makes for an unforgettable travel experience. For hikers and nature lovers, Gosausee offers a variety of trails, from easy walks around the lake to more demanding alpine routes leading up into the Dachstein mountains. The air is incredibly fresh, the water is clear enough to see the bottom, and the sound of nature surrounds you everywhere you go. If you are looking for a peaceful but adventurous escape, this is definitely the place to visit.
